Got the Fiverr – Get computer help for $5

What is Fiverr you say? It is a website where people advertise jobs that they can do for $5. Everything costs $5. I am not sure why the website is not called the $5 site? Anyway, there are thousands of jobs advertised , including people offering computer help. There are ads for getting rid of viruses, fixing a computer problem, even doing a system restore. Sounds too good to be true you say? Ah, this is what I thought.
Should you really be giving a complete stranger access to your computer, to roam around freely, and search and destroy your problem? This is what happens if you were to employ someone remotely to fix your computer. You must let them in via your internet connection, behind your protection, and basically into your home. They could copy your files, delete files, or even worse, crash your computer.
Fiverr - All jobs done for $5

How does Fiverr work?

To do anything on Fiverr you will have to register, which by the way is the easiest process I have seen.
If you want to find someone to do a particular job for you then you can easily type your keyword into the search in the right sidebar.
  1. For example I would type in “website link“.
  2. When I find someone I like I can press on the order now button.
  3. You can also click on Contact Seller before buying to ask questions.
hire someone on fiverr
If you want to offer your services you can simple fill in the sentence at the top of the homepage that says “I will……….for $5″ and then press continue.
post a job on fiverr
It is all very basic and easy to use.

What type of jobs can you get done on Fiverr?

You can get almost anything you imagine done for you on Fiverr, but within reason of course. You can’t get someone to take your granny to the shops for the afternoon but you can get someone to sack one of your annoying employees by email or over the phone. Yes this is true..There are totally normal job posts there and others that make you wonder, “Who in their right mind would want that?” I mean seriously, would you want to pay $5 to yell at someone for half an hour or hug 10 people on the street and send you proof?

Here is a list of cool, useful jobs you can get done for you on Fiverr:

  1. Get a business logo designed.
  2. Get someone to research something for you.
  3. Get a photo edited to make you look like a gangster or an avatar character.
  4. Get cheap advertising on other websites.
  5. Get graphics made for you.
  6. Get a poem or story written for you.
  7. Get a song written or sung for you.
  8. Setup a WordPress website.
  9. Edit html code for you.
  10. And more…
http://www.fiverr.com/

Jobs I do not recommend getting done:

  1. Virus removal. (If you know the company then that is fine)
  2. Computer help, giving access to your private computer.
  3. Youtube views on videos. (fake people watching your videos)
  4. Gaining Twitter followers. (fake people following you)

When Is it OK to get computer help on Fiverr and give access to your computer?

Its not really ok to do this, however there are special circumstances to consider. The person offering this service might have hundred’s of previous customers feedback that are almost impossible to fake.. The feeback is located uder the job description. It looks a bit like comments on a blog. If there are no comments there it means they have not done this job for anyone yet.

Whats the difference between a virus, spyware, Malware, and adware?

Whats the difference between a virus, spyware, Malware, and adware?

Now days the average computer user must be aware of the potential threats their computer faces each time you connect to the world wide web. It is a dangerous place for a computer and the security threats are growing everyday. It all so confusing, viruses, spyware, malware, and adware, just to name a few. Why are they all so different?
In the old days we used to call everything a virus, however now days we have more precise names to further categorize them. Below I will show you the difference between a virus, spyware, malware, and adware.

What is Malware?

Malware is a software program that has bad intentions. It can either be installed by the computer user accidentally or it can sneak into your computer through various avenues. Its not the same as a piece of software that by chance causes harm to your computer, malware is software that has been developed with the intent of causing problems with your computer.

What is Spyware?

Spyware is a type of malware program that invades your computer and basically spies on you. There are different types of spyware that collect different information. A common spyware type is a keylogger which records keystrokes typed on your keyboard. This is how people lose their bank account details. Other spyware will record your actions and browsing habits on the internet. Any information collected by spyware is usually with the intent to sell.

What is Adware?

Adware is another form of malware and is exactly as the name suggests, software with advertising. Adware can be downloaded and sometimes included in free programs. For example Windows Live messenger and Yahoo messenger contain adware. Although some programs give the option not to install the extra adware, others seem to sneak it in without permission.

What is Virus?

A virus is a small program designed to infect your computer and cause errors, computer crashes, and even destroy your computer hardware. Unlike spyware, a virus can grow and replicate itself. It can also travel from one computer to another via an internet connection. Of course you can get viruses from discs with virus infested files stored on them, however the internet is the most common entry point. Some common symptoms of a virus are emails being sent to all contacts when you didn’t send them, being taken to webpage’s that you didn’t choose, or being told you have a virus and to download a program to fix it.
See my tips on Virus removal software
If you haven’t got antivirus software installed on your computer you can try Avast. It also takes care of spyware, malware, etc and it is fantastic!  Take advantage of avast! try before you buy policy. avast! offer most of their products on a trial basis for 60 days. Click here

Think Point – Fake security software attacking the web

If you’ve come across Think Point antispyware software – be aware. It is a fake program created with intention to trick scared computer users into purchasing a useless full version.
The infection sources may vary, but most popular ones include installing a video codec on an untrustworthy site, opening an e-mail attachment from a falsified e-mail named after a courier company (such as DHL, or FedEx), pop-up’s, or as even some users reported, while playing a game on Facebook.
After clicking on fake warning messages, a Trojan is installed which opens up a “backdoor” to internet. An automated script does a series of instructions hijacking your browser and changing registry entries that result in an unusable computer – desktop icons are removed, task manager and internet connection is disabled.
Some users may be presented with a Microsoft Security Essentials Alert which is actually created by the Think Point infection. This alert promotes five security programs, including Think Point. While one is given a choice to select, Think Pont will be installed no matter what you choose.
Think Point will perform a computer scan which generates a false report including massive amounts of Trojans, viruses and spyware being found your machine. It is also impossible to run any executable application, because all is blocked by Think Point – a message will be popped up stating that executable file is already infected.
All this is done in order to scare an amateur computer user and force him into purchasing a full version, which costs 90$.
Think Point
Please print these instructions:
1.       As ThinkPoint infection is not giving any access to the Desktop you must restart Windows. Just after Windows boots up, press CTRL + ALT & DEL on your keyboard at once. This should bring up the Windows Task Manager.
2.       In the Task Manager window select the Processes tab on the top.
3.       Look through the list of processes until you find the hotfix.exe process.
4.       Click left mouse button on it and press END PROCESS button situated at the bottom of the Task manager. Windows should ask you to confirm killing the process, select Yes to terminate hotfix.exe .
5.       Now ThinkPoint was disabled, and you should restore a normal desktop by clicking File menu on the Task manager, select New Task (Run) and type iexplorer.exe in the OPEN field. This will grant you access to the Internet Explorer.
6.       After this you must search and delete the hotfix.exe file on your computer which may be hidden.
7.       If after deleting the file and rebooting the pc you’re still left with a blank desktop repeat step 5. You will need to fix various registry settings or use a popular and trustworthy security program.

Apply a menu template to a folder in Windows XP or Vista

Applying a template to a folder is often an overlooked feature in Windows. Even I have been guilty of moving music to a music folder so I can have access to the menu that comes with that template. If only I had realized that you could just make any folder a music folder or a picture folder.
What is a Folder template?
A folder template changes the way your folder looks when you open it. For example if you open the music folder you will see a link to play all music and if you open a pictures folder you will see a link to see a slide show. However it would be pointless to have a link to play all music when you are in the pictures folder.
How do you apply a new template to a folder?
  1. Go to the folder that you want to apply the template to.
  2. Go to the menu at the top and choose view.
  3. Then choose customize this folder.
  4. The folder properties should open and start on the customize tab.
  5. Press the drop down arrow to see your choices for a new template.
In Windows Vista, if the file, edit , view, tools, help menu is not there press the ALT key to make them show.
What are the advantages to applying a menu template to a folder?
Applying a folder template can be very useful if you store your pictures or music in another area besides the default allocated folders. For example you could store your pictures in a folder on an external backup drive and apply the picture folder template to it.
  Folder template
Notes on applying a folder template:
  • Applying a  picture template to a folder with pictures in it is handy if you like having slide shows. You can just click on the slide show link and all the pictures in there will be on your desktop.
  • You can make folders with your favorite music, then apply a music template so you can press play all to hear them all play like a playlist.

Backup your cookies by using the import export option in your browser

Seriously, I never thought I would say this, but I cannot live without my cookies! Yes that’s right, I love them. I hate going to a website to sign in and I actually have to type the password and username myself. Hello guys? Who wants to type in your login details when a cookie can do it for you.
Because I go to so many websites, having my cookies enabled lets me surf around the internet quickly and effortlessly.  This is why it is very important to backup your cookies by exporting and importing them back in Windows XP.
 What is a cookie?
Usually thought as some kind of biscuit, however in computer language it means something completely different.  A cookie is a text information message that is stored on your computer when you visit a web page.
When you return to the page the cookie is used to recognize you. It records information such as your name, site login password, preferences, shopping cart info, and more..
How to export your cookies from Internet Explorer?
  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to the file menu at the top
  3. From the menu choose Export.
  4. The Import/Export Wizard will appear. Select Export Cookies from the list.
  5. Now it will show you where the exported cookie file will be. If you want to change this location, press on browse.
  6. Press Next to go on. Then press finish.
  7. Now a file will be stored in the folder of your choice to use to restore your cookies at a later date.
  8. To import the cookies on another computer, launch the Import/Export Wizard, choose Import Cookies and browse to the location or disk where the cookie file has been stored.
How to view all cookies, and delete selected or all cookies in Firefox.
  1. Go to the tools menu
  2. Choose options
  3. Then Privacy and there is a button named show cookies.
  4. Click on that and you will see all cookies, grouped by site, and you will be able to delete any cookies you choose to.
If you just want to do a quick cleanout and have no interest in saving any cookies, if you go to tools>clear private data then you can select a bunch of actions to perform, including deleting all cookies.
There is also a free program called Cookie monster at http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/CookieMonster.php. I downloaded this program and gave it a go.. It will backup cookies for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, and Opera. It will also let you have a protected cookie list. This means you can keep your important cookies and delete the rest…
Below is a screenshot of what to press to download cookie monster.
Cookie Monster
Notes:
  • To import the cookies on another computer, launch the Import/Export Wizard, choose Import Cookies and browse to the location or disk where the cookie file has been stored.
  • Firefox cookies are in local disk (C in most cases) \documents and settings\username\application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles\qzx3idps.default\cookies.sqlite

Change settings in the Regional and language options

The Regional and language options hold some very important settings for your computer. This is where you can change the language, location, date format, keyboard type, currency format, and more. For example if you have chosen the wrong location for your computer then your local time on your computer will also show up wrong.
And if you choose US English for language when you really need Australian English, then even your spell-check will be telling you to spell words according to the US dictionary. So you will be using a lot of Z’s instead of S’s. Like organize and organize.
Where are the Regional and Language options?
Its really easy to find the Regional and Language options. All you have to do is go to the start menu, choose control panel from the menu. Then browse for the Regional and Language icon and double click on it to open. The first window that appears is pictured below.
regional and language settings
What settings can you change on the Regional and Languages formats tab?
Press on the arrow that represents the current format and choose which format you would like for your computer. I have chosen English (Australian) which will put the currency, time , numbers, and dates in a format I can understand. If you change the format you will see a preview of what data will look like using that particular format. Once you have chosen a format you can click on customize this format. Then another box with a few extra settings will appear.
What settings can you change on the Regional and Languages location tab?
On this tab you can only choose your location of where you are. Therefore if you are in Australia choose that. If you are in the US choose that..
What settings can you change on the Regional and Languages keyboards and languages tab?
On the keyboards and languages tab you can change what input language you use. This is handy if you are from a non English speaking country, however the US keyboard is pretty much the standard for most of us. In Australia we do have an Australian keyboard and therefore US is the default for us. However if you were from Bangladesh or Russia you could change the input language to suit.

How to hide the Language bar from showing on your desktop.
The language bar is sometimes showing on your task bar but this is not necessary so I prefer to hide the language bar.
  1. Open the regional and language options from the control panel.
  2. On the first format tab click on the customize this format button.
  3. The text service and input languages box will appear. See screenshot below.
  4. Go to the Language bar tab.
  5. Put a check next to Hidden. This will hide the language bar.
  6. Press apply and ok.

Computer Buying Tips & tricks for 2010 – desktop or laptop

Previously I had written an article onTips for buying a desktop computer in 2008, however technology has progressed considerably since then, therefore making that information obsolete. In 2009 and 2010 we are all now using our desktop and laptop computers for more and more tasks everyday. Most of us rely on a computer for communication, education, and even entertainment. There seems to be no ending to a computers capability and this is why you need to buy a computer that will suit your needs.  If you know what to buy and just want to know how to buy, then see general computer buying tips.

Desktop Computer Buying Tips & Tricks for 2010

If you just want a computer to check your emails, then you can go and buy any old computer to do the job. If you want to do a bit more with a desktop computer, like saving files, browsing the internet, or using large applications, you will need a computer to suit those needs.
Now days the sky’s the limit when it comes to the size, speed, and capacity of the new computers. However my desktop computer buying tips are for the average person, not the rev head geek with a 350chev computer. These tips are aimed at a person buying a full computer system that is already put together.

What kind of computer case suits you?

There are some very fancy looking computer systems that might look appealing in the shop, but might not look so good after a year or so. There are red monsters with flashing lights, with opening doors, and hidden buttons. I prefer the black, relatively plain computer case, but still nice looking. This will last the test of time and fashion. It won’t turn out to be some piece of unfashionable junk.

How fast should a computer be for 2010?

Having quality components inside your computer will obviously make it run faster.
Dual core or more…The minimum processor you will need should be dual core. You can get a dual core 3.2ghz which runs very fast. This is what I have in my computer and it runs 20-30 tasks at the same time. That is a bit extreme, however we are thinking of the future. We do not want your computer to be outdated and slow in a years’ time. I also usually prefer an Intel processor, however AMD and Athlon are very good also.
If you choose to go for a quad core I will be seriously jealous, as this computer would perform any task and do hundreds at the same time. But don’t forget that every great processor needs a decent amount of ram (memory) to function to its full potential.

How much memory do I need?

Having 4Gb of memory would be just great! I would say that you would defiantly need this if you are using the Windows Vista operating system. However if you have Windows Seven, which runs fantastic even on old computers, then don’t worry if you have less.
Windows Seven is a better operating system and uses less computer resources. I have an old 3ghz computer (not even a dual core), 1 GB ram, with Windows Seven on it. I must admit that I am only using this computer as a media player that is connected to my TV. It is not storing hardly any files. Still great though!

How much hard drive space do I need when buying a computer in 2010?

You are probably thinking that you do not need much hard drive storage space, but let me explain. In the good old days, photos were printed at a photo shop, however now we store all of our photos digitally. This means we will naturally need more storage space. We also extract video footage from video camera’s which takes up a lot of room, and new games really take up room. The point is, if you are buying this computer for the future, then you should be equipped.
I recommend having at least a 250GB hard drive for the main hard drive where the operating system will be installed. Then it would be great to have a second hard drive installed where you can store your files (installing a second hard drive takes about 5 mins). After that I would suggest buying a 500GB external hard drive to backup onto.
This might sound extreme to you, but who would have ever thought we would be storing our photos on the computer and printing them from there. Soon everything might be stored digitally.
Motherboard? When buying a ready made desktop people usually overlook the motherboard which is the main system board of the computer. You can check to see if the motherboard includes enough plugs
Do I need a DVD Drive?
Yes you do need a DVD drive. This will play music cd’s, games, DVD movies, and more. You should have at least one DVD burner drive installed. When you are buying a new computer the minimum you should have installed is a 20 speed DVD writer. Now days you can buy a DVD burner from Ebay, brand new, for around $30 so why not have one?
Do I need an extra graphics and sound card installed?
If you plan to watch movies, look at fancy graphics on the internet, or play games on your computer then you need a graphics  card. Having a graphics card will make your computer run faster. If you do not have a graphics card, when graphics appear on your screen it will be using the computers memory to display it. This will slow your computer down, or in some cases, even stop it dead.
A sound card is a different story though. Do you want to turn your computer into a monster stereo or do you just want to hear sound? I have onboard 6 channel sound with sub woofer speakers and can still blast my office with sound. I personally do not need a sound card, and the average user shouldn’t either.
Standard items that come with every computer system:
Your computer should come with a computer keyboard, mouse, LCD flat screen monitor, and all the cords needed to connect the computer. It should also come with all the necessary CD’s needed to restore the computer to its original state.
How much does the average new desktop computer cost in 2010?
If you were to get all of these features I have mentioned above, and you did shop around, there is no doubt you could get this for around $1,000. If you wanted to add more warranty, that would be extra. Of course you can go for a bigger and better computer and spend more money, but if you do not need it, why do it?
If you are game enough to build your own I suggest you make a list of the parts you need, price them on Ebay, then compare those prices to your local computer store.  I have always found that Ebay wins hands down for price as long as you can pick up the parts. Always make sure the parts are compatible with each other. If you are not sure, ask the sales person to guarantee that the parts are compatible.
Laptop computer buying tips & tricks for 2010
When choosing a new laptop to buy, you should be careful because there is a lot of cheap junk out there on the market. Follow these tips for buying a new laptop computer that should last at least two years or more.
  1. Make sure the laptop is an Intel dual core at the minimum.
  2. 2GB of ram (memory) minimum.
  3. A minimum of 250GB hard drive. (And an external hard drive for backup).
  4. Inbuilt wireless adapter, and a Ethernet port.
  5. Make sure it has enough USB ports. Everything plugs in through USB now days.
  6. I would be ideal to get a spare battery and an ac adapter. These are the parts that go first on a laptop.
  7. Inbuilt DVD burner.
  8. Firewire port to connect a video camera if necessary.
  9. A laptop carry bag for protection and to hold all the accessories.
  10. A wireless mini mouse.
  11. A year or more warranty.
  12. MAKE SURE the laptop is not display stock as they leave the power adapters plugged in and running 24-7.
Choosing the right desktop or laptop computer to buy can be a daunting task if you don’t know what you are talking about. What does all that computer jargon mean anyway? Hard drive, processor, ram, memory, hardware, software. Here is a definition of the most common computer terms. It is best to arm yourself with a bit of research and knowledge about the product before you commit to buy.
Notes:
  • Transferring digital video .If you want to edit digital video you will need a firewire card to transfer your digital video to your computer. However if you have a newer type video camera it could possibly connect through a USB port on your computer, therefore you wouldn’t need a firewire. To edit video’s you will also need a decent graphics card to handle the work.
  • Gaming machine You will need a good graphics card to be able to play big games without any hiccups. Especially if you want to play something like The Sims 3.
  • Building Webpage’s and uploading files. You will need a fast broadband connection and webpage building software.

Create a free photo cd slide show with Windows XP

A cd photo slide show is a great way to share photos with your friends and family. You can send them a cd in the post for as little as $1.00 and all they have to do is pout it in their computer and the photo slide show will start.
This is also handy for sending your photos to non computer savvy people who just like to have things work automatically without having to find the pictures or try to view them on their computer.
To create a photo slide show you will need:
  • A genuine copy of Windows XP.
  • You will need to download the free cd slide show power toy from the Microsoft websitehere. Install the program by choosing run when the download has finished.
  • You will need some photos on your computer.
  • A blank cd.
How to choose photos for your cd slide show:
The simplest way to choose the photos for your cd slide show is to right click on the individual file and choose send to, then choose to send to your cd drive.
The file will be put in the writeable cd folder, waiting for more to be added. See more details on How to burn a Cd using Windows XP
If you want to select more than one photo at a time, hold the ctrl key down when you are selecting photos. When they are all blue, right click on a blue bit and choose send to cd drive.
send to cd drive
Every time you add a file to the writeable cd folder a balloon notification will appear in the taskbar. You can double click on this balloon to see what you have added that is going to be burnt to a cd.

Creating, saving, copying, pasting, and moving files or folders on your computer

Files and folders are an important when it comes to using a computer because the computers entire existence is made up of files which are stored in folders. A group of files together form a software program which runs on your computer. These program files are stored in a folder called program files which will have sub folders or directories with the individual program contained in them.
You can also create your own files by typing a document and saving it, or downloading photos to your computer. All files and folders can be copied, saved, pasted or even moved to another location.

What is the difference between a file and a folder?

A folder is a container for either more folders or files. It can hold an endless amounts of folders and files, depending upon what hard drive disk space you have available.
Sometimes folders are called directories because this is what they were called in the old days when there was no Windows operating system. We used to have to change directories to get around, but now we just double click on a folder icon to enter to see its contents.
A file can be part of a software package or something you have created yourself.  For example your Windows operating system has files stored in the Windows folder in order for it to run correctly. Essentially a file stores information and can be used for a particular purpose. Different files perform different tasks. Some files start programs (.exe files), some files hold text (.txt file), some files store pictures (bmp, jpeg, tiff). Files cannot hold folders in them. See more information on File extensions What are they?
Below in my screenshot I have a folder that contains a new folder and a .txt file….If I click on the folder I will enter it and see what other files or folders it stores. If I click on the text file I will see the information it holds, which is usually text. The file is a dead end but the folder may hold another folder, which holds another folder, which holds another folder, and so on.
What is a file or folder

How do you create a new file?

The easiest way to create a new file is to install a new program. Installing a program brings with it a whole package of files in order for the program to run. The next way to create a new file is to use a program to type some words and then save it as a file. For example you can use an office program to type a letter and then save it to your computer hard drive, now you have created a file. You can also download a file from other devices such as a USB flash drive or a digital camera.

How do you create a new folder?

I have different folders for everything. It makes it easier to find something if your computer is organized, so you will need to regularly make new folders.
  1. Go to the start menu and choose documents or my documents.
  2. Go to the blank space in the documents folder with your mouse.
  3. Then right click in the blank space, not on a folder or file.
  4. menu will appear. Choose new from the menu.
  5. Another side menu will appear, choose folder.
  6. Now a new folder will appear in the documents folder.
  7. It will be highlighted blue so you can rename it something you like.
  8. Just click where the blue is and start typing your name and press enter or move away and click in a blank space.
  9. The folder will be there ready for you to put files into.
make a new folder
If you were in the my pictures folder and you performed these steps to create a new folder, the new folder would be in the my pictures folder and not the my documents folder. You can go into any folder and create new folders in them. You can even create new folders directly on C: drive, however I do not recommend this as it is better to keep this area clean.

What happens when you copy a file or folder?

When you copy a file or folder this means the original file will still be in its original location. You can paste the file to another location on your hard drive and then have two copies of the same file. For example if you copy a file called DOG.jpeg from my documents and paste it into the my pictures folder, there will now be a copy of DOG.jpeg in both my documents and the my picture folder.

What does it mean when you cut a file or folder?

To cut a file or folder means you are taking it away and moving it to another location. That’s means you are moving the original file or folder. It is not copying the file it is cutting it out and pasting it somewhere else. This means you end up with one copy of the file.

How do you copy or cut a file or folder so you can move it to another location?

  1. Go to the start menu and choose documents or my documents.
  2. Select a folder that you want to cut or copy by making it blue.
  3. Then Right click on the folder when it is blue and a menu will appear.
  4. Choose to cut or copy.  See screenshot below.
copy a file or folder

How do you paste a file to another location?

Once you have copied or cut a file or folder you will need to paste it somewhere. Just be careful because if you forget to paste a file after you have cut it then you may loose that file.
  1. Go to the start menu and choose documents or my documents.
  2. Go to the blank space in the documents folder with your mouse.

How do you delete files and folders?

Make sure you know what you are deleting when you want to remove a file or folder from your computer. Normal files and folders get taken to the recycle bin, however larger files get deleted and are too large for the bin. Therefore you have no chance to restore your files if you accidentally delete a large file.
  1. Go to the start menu and choose documents or my documents.
  2. Select a folder that you want to cut or copy by making it blue.
  3. Then Right click on the folder when it is blue and a menu will appear.
  4. Choose delete from the menu. See screenshot below.
