PC Tips To Keep You And Your Online Computer Secure And Problem Free

Hi,
I have been using computer for years, here are some of the maintenance tips to take care of your PC/Computer/Laptop/Server so that it works without problems.
On Software Front:
1. Install an Antivirus – freeware or paid one, lots of them are there. Use virustotal.com service if you want to be almost 100percent sure that the new file being used on your PC is virus free. Also keep your antivirus updated.
2. Install a Firewall – Free or commercial version, which ever you can afford, it will keep your PC safe from outside online attacks from hackers. Also keep the
3. Install Antispyware – Everyone hates being spied and so should your PC too. Better have two antispyware with one active at a time. Here I am referring to spyware that is able to do harm do your PC through monitoring your surfing habits, usernames and passwords, snooping your confidential data on your PC and then sending it all to somebody without your knowledge. Don’t forget to keep your antispyware updated.
4. Install Antitrojanware – Hidden malicious program inside an attractive one to give remote access to someone, grab your password to permit somebody to break in to your computer. Sometimes a single software pack can do most of the things, for example keep viruses, spyware, malware and trojans (hidden harmful codes that get activated on a particular day) away.

5. Install Antikeylogger – No one should come to know what usernames and passwords you typed on your online PC.
6. Install Application Software (browsers, FTP – File Transfer Client, Image editors, Word processors etc.) from reputed sources and not from source as the file being installed can be infected.
7. Don’t use P2P and torrent clients to download illegal stuff from Net. There is something hidden in these files mostly to cause harm to your PC.
8. Be alert and don’t open emails and attachments from unknown persons.
9. Always buy licensed method software which the base for letting other software operate on it.
10. Ensure you have a backup software to take backups of your files. Also have your PC Create System Restore point automatically whenever installing something new. This will help you in coming back to a working computer state in case the new software malfunctions.
11. Defragment your hard disk to improve the rate it provides data from it. Defragmentation arranges the similar data in continuous way on your hard disk so that hard disk reading process doesn’t need to work a bunch browsing for the information to load a program or file etc.
12. Install screen savers or switch off monitor when you are't using it (going for half an hour break with some downloads happening in the background), use optimized setting for hard disk (should become idle when not in use) and other devices available in the CMOS setup. This will increase the life of the respective hardware as they should be used only when needed.
On Hardware Front:
1. Keep your computer clean externally – This will keep insects, flies away. Avoid drinking tea, coffee etc. while working on your PC.
2. Make sure that there's no gaps large enough in your PC for lizards, cockroaches etc. to go inside and piss on your PC electronics
3. Ensure that the interiors of PC are clean, i.e., dust free. If you can do the cleaning yourself do it at normal of once in three months or get it done. The more the dust on the chips etc., the more are the chances of their failure!
4. Ensure computer back is at least three to four inches away from the wall so that its fans can throw out heat. Your computer need to remain cool!
5. All the fans of the computer need to work, use a software provided next to the PC manufacturer to do so. Sometimes a fan thats making noises is likely to be fail soon, get it rectified soon.
6. If the place where the computer is being used is hot (above 25 degree Celsius), use an air conditioner. Don’t use a water cooler as water moisture can short circuit the electronics of PC.
7. Use a cable fixer to route cables properly, they should not hang and obstruct the way of the passers. Oh! it also makes your PC aesthetics good and less dust accumulation in comparison to them lying on the floor.
8. Use UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to protect PC from over voltages and brownouts etc.
9. Use spike busters for the interfaces like Ethernet cable and telephone cables etc. as they can sometimes carry high voltages due to some or other problem. None of the external interface can be trusted for always having a safe voltage, to be directly connected to your PC’s port.
10. Make sure that the power to the PC is right (right earthing with leakage not more than 5V between Neutral and Earth) and provided by good quality of wires, sockets, plugs etc. If these are of bad quality then it can lead to electrical sparks and even fire.
11. Don’t fiddle with your PC components to repair a fault if you don’t know ABC of computer repair. Call somebody who is Expert! I personally know of cases where people not knowing much about repair of PC have messed with their computer thinking that it’s minor problem and can be repaired easily. One of my friend burnt his PC CPU as he forgot to put back heat sink and fan on the CPU, It hardly took 5-10 seconds for CPU to get heated and give smoke. He finally ended in spending about $100 on its repair.

12. Buy quality repair parts and get repair done from professionals. Cheap computer parts can definitely save you cash but can cost you more in the lengthy run.
Buy ergonomically created computer furniture and chair and have a proper posture, take breaks when working for hours continuously.
If you have some other tips to share with me from your experience, let me know as there's still lots of left, have covered only the main ones
Hope that these experienced tips helps some of my friends in keeping their PC healthy and secure online!

How to recover MOST of scratched CD data discs

I learn an old thecnique to how to recover damaged or scratched disks
with some lost of data. In this case i have one borrowed game - MAX PAYNE 2
with a chunck of four mb lost with a scratch in CD1 Install. Here we cover some
special thecniques of how to make a full working CD from the scratched one.

First some tools will be needed:

1. Alcohol 120percent
2. UltraISO
3. Windows XP/2000 (not tested on 95/98/me)
3. Small part of cotton
4. Dry cleaner paper
5. Finally, oil for cooking.

First process - preparing the CD

Get the cotton and drop some water, start cleaning vertically the surface of CD.
Do it three times and dry the water with a part of dry cleaner paper. With a new piece
of cotton, drop some oil for cooking and start to wet the surface such as you are
washing the CD with the oil. Dry carefully now. Some particles of oil will stay on the
microsurface of the scrath. Its okay. Seems the oil helps the laser of the CD/DVD driver
to read the surface again. Sure this will work with small unreadable scratchs - some hard
scratchs loose parts of the surface of the CD where we have data and its lost forever.
But if it is loosed attempt anyway. Whith this tip 80percent of the small scratched CDs coud be
recovered.

Second Step - testing the CD

With Alcohol 120percent make an ISO - image making wizard - and lets see if the app can
read the loosed surface. In my case Alcohol 120percent had recovered 60percent of the data.
This is not enough. Have tryed other appz, they don't recover all the data. But the
CD/DVD driver laser CAN recover all data in this case. the data is still there, what we do?

third process - making the new CD

With the main copy method of windows explorer you can do it. Just make one folder
with the same name of the CD label for future burn reference, as well as copy the CD content
to the folder. When the CD copy process get the scratch, in majority of the cases, its
slow down the reading and will recover ALL loosed data.If not, it just tell you theres
an unreadable sector. In this case your CD is lost. But its not my case, finally
windows explorer got all the data from the scratch and made a copy in the folder.
with the ultraISO, wrote the original CD label, drop the content of the folder and
save as Iso. You can Test the new CD just mounting the iso in the Alcohol 120percent. In my
case i did ISO of the two discs from MAX PAYNE two and tested installing from the mounted
ISO. Works such as a charm. I got the four mb lost again. So, I have burned the CD and now i
have a working copy from the scratched one.

Sounds too bizzarre, but works. Course you can jump the cleaning process and attempt to copy
the content with Windows explorer. But in my case didn't work without oil...

Rename Multiple Files at Once

When you download photos from your digital camera, they frequently have unrecognizable names. You can rename several similar files at once with the following procedure. This also works for renaming other kinds of files.

1.Open the My Pictures folder. (Click Start, as well as then click My Pictures.) Or open another folder containing files which you want to rename.

2.Select the files you want to rename. If the files you want are't adjacent in the file list, press and hold CTRL, as well as then click each item to select it.

3.On the File menu, click Rename.

4.Type the new name, as well as then press ENTER.

All of the files in the series will be named in sequence using the new name you type. For example, if you mode Birthday, the first will be named Birthday and subsequent files in the series will be named Birthday (1), Birthday (2), as well as so on. To specify the starting number for the series, mode the starting number in parentheses after the new file name. The files in the series will be numbered in sequence starting with the number you type. For example, if you mode Birthday (10), the other files will be named Birthday (11), Birthday (12), as well as so on.

Top 10 Password Crackers

#1
Cain and Abel : The top password recovery tool for Windows
UNIX users frequently smugly assert that the best free security tools support their platform first, as well as Windows ports are frequently an afterthought. They are usually right, but Cain and Abel is a glaring exception. This Windows-only password recovery tool handles an enormous variety of tasks. It can recover passwords through sniffing the network, cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, revealing password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols.

#2
John the Ripper : A powerful, flexible, as well as quick multi-platform password hash cracker
John the Ripper is a quick password cracker, currently available for lots of flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported, not counting unique architectures), DOS, Win32, BeOS, as well as OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak Unix passwords. It supports several crypt(3) password hash kinds which are most commonly found on various Unix flavors, as well as Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP LM hashes.

#3
THC Hydra : A Fast network authentication cracker which support lots of services
When you must brute force crack a remote authentication service, Hydra is frequently the tool of choice. It can perform rapid dictionary attacks against more then 30 protocols, including telnet, ftp, http, https, smb, several databases, as well as much more.

#4
Aircrack : The fastest available WEP/WPA cracking tool
Aircrack is a suite of tools for 802.11a/b/g WEP and WPA cracking. It can recover a 40 through 512-bit WEP key once enough encrypted packets have been gathered. It can also attack WPA one or two networks using advanced cryptographic methods or through brute force. The suite includes airodump (an 802.11 packet capture program), aireplay (an 802.11 packet injection program), aircrack (static WEP and WPA-PSK cracking), as well as airdecap (decrypts WEP/WPA capture files).

#5
L0phtcrack : Windows password auditing and recovery application
L0phtCrack, also known as LC5, tries to crack Windows passwords from hashes which it can obtain (given proper access) from stand-alone Windows NT/2000 workstations, networked servers, primary domain controllers, or Active Directory. In some cases it can sniff the hashes off the wire. It also has numerous methods of generating password guesses (dictionary, brute force, etc). LC5 was discontinued through Symantec in 2006, but you can still get the LC5 installer floating around. The free trial only lasts 15 days, as well as Symantec will not sell you a key, so youll either need to cease using it or get a key generator. Since it is no longer maintained, you are likely better off putting forth effort Cain and Abel, John the Ripper, or Ophcrack instead.

#6
Airsnort : 802.11 WEP Encryption Cracking Tool
AirSnort is a wireless LAN (WLAN) tool that recovers encryption keys. It was developed next to the Shmoo Group and operates through passively monitoring transmissions, computing the encryption key when enough packets have been gathered. You may also be interested in the similar Aircrack.

#7
SolarWinds : A plethora of network discovery/monitoring/attack tools
SolarWinds has created and sells dozens of special-purpose tools targeted at systems administrators. Security-related tools include lots of network discovery scanners, an SNMP brute-force cracker, router password decryption, a TCP connection reset program, one of the fastest and easiest router config download/upload applications available and more.

#8
Pwdump : A window password recovery tool
Pwdump is able to extract NTLM and LanMan hashes from a Windows target, regardless of whether Syskey is enabled. It is also capable of displaying password histories if they are available. It outputs the data in L0phtcrack-compatible form, as well as can write to an output file.

#9
RainbowCrack : An Innovative Password Hash Cracker
The RainbowCrack tool is a hash cracker that makes use of a large-scale time-memory trade-off. A traditional brute force cracker tries all possible plaintexts one through one, which can be time consuming for intricate passwords. RainbowCrack uses a time-memory trade-off to do all the cracking-time computation in advance and store the results in so-called "rainbow tables". It does take a lengthy time to precompute the tables but RainbowCrack can be hundreds of times faster than a brute force cracker once the precomputation is finished.

#10
Brutus : A network brute-force authentication cracker
This Windows-only cracker bangs against network services of remote systems putting forth effort to guess passwords through using a dictionary and permutations thereof. It supports HTTP, POP3, FTP, SMB, TELNET, IMAP, NTP, as well as more.

hacking with an IP address

So say somehow somewhere we ended up choosing a target to start wreaking havoc upon. All we need is an IP Address. Theres more than enough of papers out there that go into how to obtain an IP Address from the preferred mark of your choice. So Im not going to go into that subject. Alright so say we got the targets IP Address finally. What do we do with this IP Address. Well first ping the IP Address to make sure that its alive. In otherwords online. Now at the bottom of this document ill include some links where you can obtain some key tools that may help on your journey through the electronic jungle. So we must get places to get inside of the computer so we can start putting forth effort to get a way to "hack" the box. Port Scanners are used to identify the open ports on a machine that is running on a network, whether its a router, or a desktop computer, they will all have ports. Protocols use these ports to communicate with other services and resources on the network.

1) Blues Port Scanner - This program will scan the IP address which you chose and identify open ports that are on the target box.

Example 1:
Idlescan using Zombie (192.150.13.111:80); Class: Incremental
Interesting ports on 208.225.90.120:
(The 65522 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed)
Port State Service
21/tcp open ftp
25/tcp open smtp
80/tcp open http
111/tcp open sunrpc
135/tcp open loc-srv
443/tcp open https 1027/tcp open IIS
1030/tcp open iad1
2306/tcp open unknown
5631/tcp open pcanywheredata
7937/tcp open unknown
7938/tcp open unknown
36890/tcp open unknown

In example one now we see that there's a variety of ports open on this box. Take note of all the ports which you see listed before you. Most of them will be paired up with the mode of protocol that uses that port (IE. 80-HTTP 25-SMTP Etc Etc...) Simply take all that information and paste it into notepad or the editor of your choice. This is the beginning of your targets record. So now we know what ports are open. These are all theoretical points of entry where we could wiggle into the computer system. But we all know its not that easy. Alright so we do not even know what mode of software or what operating method that this method is running.

2) NMAP - Port Scanner - Has different OS fingerprinting methods so when the program sees a certain series of ports open it uses its best judgement to guess what operating method its running. Generally right with my experiences.

So we need to figure out what mode of software this box is running if we are gonna start hacking the thing right? Many of you have used TELNET for your MUDS and MOOS and weird multiplayer text dungeons and lots of of you havent even heard of it before period. TELNET is used to open a remote connection to an IP Address through a Port. So what that means is we are accessing their computer from across the internet, all we need is their IP Address and a port number. With that record you are starting to compile, open a TELNET connection to the IP Address and enter one of the OPEN ports which you found on the target.
So say we typed TELNET -o xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 25 This command will open up a connection through port 25 to the IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Now you may see some text at the very top of the screen. You may think, well what the hell, how is that little string of text going to help me. Well get that list you are starting to write, as well as copy the banners into your compilation of the information youve gathered on your target. Banners/Headers are what you get when you TELNET to the open ports. Heres an example of a banner from port 25.

220 jesus.gha.chartermi.net ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.8/8.12.8; Fri, seven Oct 2005 01:22:29 -0400

Now this is a very important segment in the enumeration process. You notice it says Sendmail 8.12.8/8.12.8 Well what do ya know, we now have discovered a version number. This is where we can start identifying the programs running on the machine. There are some instances in which companies will attempt and falsify their headers/banners so hackers are unable to get out what programs are truly installed. Now just copy all the banners from all the open ports *Some Ports May Have No Bannners* and organize them in the little record we have of the target. Now we have all the open ports, as well as a list of the programs running and their version numbers. This is some of the most sensitive information you can come across in the networking world. Other points of interest may be the DNS server, that contains lots of information and if you are able to manipulate it than you can pretend to hotmail, as well as steal a bunch of peoples email. Well now back to the task at handu. Apart from actual company secrets and secret configurations of the network hardware, you got some good juicy info.
Code:
http://www.securityfocus.com
is a very good resource for searching up software vulnerabilities. If you can not get vulnerabilities there, search on google. There are many, many, lots of other sites that post vulnerabilities that their groups get and their affiliates.

At SecurityFocus you can search through vendor and whatnot to attempt and get your peice of software, or you can use the search box. When i browsed SecurityFocus i found a paper on how Sendmail 8.12.8 had a buffer overflow. There was proof of concept code where they wrote the shellcode and everything, so if you ran the code with the right syntax, a command prompt would just spawn. You should notice a (#) on the line where your code is being typed. That pound symbol means that the command prompt window that is currently open was opened as root. The highest privilage on a UNIX/Linux Box. You have just successfully hacked a box. Now which you have a command shell in front of you, you can start doing whatever you want, delete everything if you want to be a ****ing jerk, however I do not recommend that. Maybe leave a text file saying how you did it and that they should patch their system.....whoever they are. And lots of times the best thing you can do is just lay in the shadows, do not allow anybody know what you did. More frequently than not this is the path you are going to want to take to avoid unwanted visits next to the authorities.

There are lots of kinds of exploits out there, some are Denial of Service exploits, where you shut down a box, or render an application/process unusable. Called denial of service simply because you are denying a service on someones box to everyone putting forth effort to access it. Buffer Overflow exploits are involved when a variable inside some code doesnt have input validation. Each letter you enter in for the string variable will be one byte long. Now where the variables are located at when they are in use through a program is called the buffer. Now what do you think overflowing the buffer means. We overflow the buffer so we can get to a totally different memory address. Then people write whats called shellcode in hex. This shellcode is what returns that command prompt when you run the exploit. That wasnt the best description of a buffer overflow, however all you must keep in mind is that garbage data fills up the data registers so then the buffer overflows and allows for remote execution of almost every command available. There are many, lots of other kinds of attacks that cannot all be described here, such as man-in-the-middle attacks where you spoof who you are. Performed correctly, the victim will enter
Code:
http://www.bank.com
and his connection will be redirected to your site where you can make a username and password box, make the site look legit. And your poor mark will enter their credentials into your site, when they think its really
Code:
http://www.bank.com
. You must have a small script configured so it will automatiically display such as an error or something once they attempt and log in with their credentials. This makes it seem such as the site is down and the victim doenst give it a second thought and will simply attempt again later.

So as a summary of how to 0Wn a box when you only have an IP Address
Method Works On BOTH *Nix and Windoze

****You can do the same with domain names (IE google.com) than what you can with IP Addresses. Run a WHOIS Lookup or something along those lines. Or check up on InterNIC you should be able to resolve the domain name to an IP address.****

- Port Scan The Address And Record Open Ports
- Telnet To Open Ports To Identify Software Running On Ports

3) netcat - Network swiss army knife. Like TELNET only better and with a bunch more functionality. Both can be used when you are putting forth effort to fingerprint software on open ports

- Record Banners And Take Note Of The Application Running and The Version Number
- Take A Gander Online At SecurityFocus.com or Eeye.com. If you can not get vulnerabilities then search google.
- Make a copy of some Proof-Of-Concept code for the vulnerability.

*Read the documentation if there's any, for the proof-of-concept code you will be using for your exploit*

- Run The Exploit Against The Victim.
- Reap The Cheap-Sh0t Ownage

**This document does not go into covering your tracks. If you dare attempt this stuff on a box you do not have consent to hack on, They will simply observe the logs and see your IP Address and then go straight to your ISP. Once you get more 1337 you get to learn how to get away with the nasty deeds. This is what the majority of kode-kiddies do when they perform attacks. The key is to enumerate all the info you can from the machine, the more info you have on the method the better. User accounts can also be enumerated. Once you have a list of account names, you may then proceed to brute-force or perform a cryptanalysis attack to gain control of the account. Then you must work on privilage escalation. Users are't Admins/Root**

Ejecting USB drives from the command line

A client of mine requires me to use their hardware to link to their network, but I do my development on my own hardware. To keep things straight, I use a external USB hard drive to keep my local copy of their repository. Switching between the machines is kind of a pain, so anytime I can simplify the process, Im all for it.

Because Im running IIS and debugging through Visual Studio, Im not able to "Safely Remove Hardware" using the icon in the dock. IIS keeps a lock on the files on the drive which means I get "The device generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device later." error.

The quickest solution I could get was to perform a "iisreset /restart" from the command line, as well as then remove hardware.

Too lots of annoying steps.

I did some research on stopping an external device by the command line, as well as came across this Ask Leo post. Essentially, Microsoft provides a utility called devcon that lets you stop USB devices from the DOS prompt.

First I ran devcon status * to get out the name of my hard drive. It was something lengthy and nasty:

USBSTORDISK&VEN_WD*PROD_2500BEV_EXTERNAL&REV_1.04575843383037353439393539&O
Name: WD 2500BEV External USB Device
Driver is running.
If I run the following at the command line, it will stop the device (provided nothing else is preventing it from doing so:

devcon remove USBSTORDISK*

(The asterisk is a wildcard character and really is needed because the command line pukes on ampersands anyway.)

Being the occasionally smart fellow I am, I created a little batch file I want to call eject.bat:

iisreset /stop
devcon remove USBSTORDISK*
iisreset /start

Now, IIS is stopped, the drive ejected, as well as IIS started again. I just run it from the command line and Ive saved myself 13.8 seconds (+/- 20 seconds).
