How to open task scheduler and set tasks for your computer

Task scheduler is a system tool that is included with Windows Xp and Windows Vista. You can use task scheduler to set tasks for your computer to follow. You can run programs, send emails, and have messages popup when you set a task in task scheduler. For example you can set task scheduler to remind you to backup your computer files or to even do a disk cleanup. Or you can even set it to actually run the program automatically.
Some people find task scheduler to be annoying, however it can be a very useful tool if it is used correctly. You can modify, delete, or create new tasks that will enable you to be in control of what tasks are performed and when they are carried out.

What are the different settings in task scheduler?
  • Triggers
  • Actions
  • Conditions
  • Task settings
Triggers: A trigger is a set of criteria, set by you, that when met, will trigger a certain task to run. A trigger can be time based like a time of day or a specific day of the week or month. A trigger can also be event based. For example the task my be scheduled to run when you log in or when the computer starts.
Actions: An action is performed when a trigger has been set off. Actions include starting a program, sending an email, or setting a reminder message. Starting a program with task scheduler can be very easy for the common programs and more difficult for the others.
Conditions: Once a trigger has been set off to start a task there can also be extra conditions added to determine whether the task will actually run or not. You could set an idle condition which would only run the task if the computer is idle. You can also set a power condition to say to only run when the AC power is plugged in.
Task Settings: These are extra settings for your task. For example you can stop a task if it runs for longer than a certain time, or you can allow the task to be run anytime other than the scheduled time.
Notes:
  • Setting a task in task scheduler can get very detailed and it is always best to start with an easy task at first.
  • You can set task scheduler to remind you to do things by having messages popupthat say what you want them to say.
  • The only way to learn is to give it a go.
