How to clear and delete the run box history list that pops up

The run box is a handy tool where you can type in commands to perform tasks or open programs and internet pages through. It can also give you access to hidden settings if you know the correct command to type in. This is great, but by default, all of your entries to the run box are recorded and listed for all to see. If you do not want this list recorded or you just want to delete the history and start again, read on..
How can I view recent entires in the Run box history?
On most operating systems such as Windows XP or Windows Vista you can get to the run box by pressing the WIN KEY and the letter R together. After the run box is open you can press on the small drop down arrow, shown in the screenshot below, to see the run box history.
Also when you go to type something into the run box it tries to assist you by showing your recent entries, therefore saving you from typing the entire command.  After a while the list can get very long and detailed.
To see all of the list simply scroll through using the arrows at the side of the list.

Why would you want to delete the run box history?
The main reason you might want to delete the run box history is that the list that pops up shows everything you have typed into the run box. Obviously it is good to clear the history list for privacy reasons. Also another reason could be that the list has become too long and is annoying when you want to type something into the run box.
How to clear the run box list?
  1. Go down to your start menu and right click on the start button.
  2. A small menu will appear. Choose properties.
  3. The taskbar and Start menu Properties will appear.
  4. Go to the Start Menu tab as shown in the screenshot below.
  5. Remove the tick next to Store and display a list of recently opened programs.
  6. Press Apply and then OK.

After completing these steps see the screenshot below. There are now no items or history in the run box list. If you want to start making a history list again, simply go back and follow the steps but put a tick in the box again.

How to stop the run box history from being recorded?
If you perform these steps mentioned in the above tutorial and leave the box unticked, no run box records will be kept as history.
  • You can experiment with commands to open programs.
  • Just remember that editing the registry is dangerous.
  • You can easily get a command to open most programs by looking for the file with the .exe file extension.
