A new window coating is being manufactured that automatically adjusts to control solar gain through windows. The company behind the window coating, RavenBrick, calls their product Raven Windows. The Raven Windows are made with a special nanomaterial coating, which makes the windows responsive to outdoor temperatures. Essentially, the Raven Windows perform such as an intelligent window filter that automatically adjusts to block solar heat when the temperature outside becomes too hot. Conversely, the Raven Window allows the solar heat inside when the temperature outside is too cold.

The material used for the Raven Window is a thermo-reflective coating thats applied to the inside surface of the outer pane of glass in a double-glazed window assembly. The material is similar to eyeglasses that darken when you process outside into sunlight but it is darker and more thermally reflective to better keep heat out. Yet, the material is transparent so it is configured to permit heat and light through when it’s cold outside. The most reflective state of the glass has a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) as low as 0.03, which means that only 3percent of the solar energy passes through the window. That helps reduce the necessity for air conditioning. The windows can also adjust during cold weather to permit as much as an SHGC of 0.35.

This is a coating applied to one surface of the glass in a double pane window, similar to low-E windows. Yet the performance is much better than that of the low-E windows. The Raven Window will sell at retail for $25 per square foot for the material and suggests that payback can be achieved within 5-8 years with these windows.
