Stay safe on a public wireless network

A few precautions to take when using wireless hotspots, to ensure that your computer’s security doesn’t land in a spot. Like everything technological, wireless hotspots are a boon and a bane. While they ensure quick and easy Internet access, they also pose big risks for your laptop.

First, communication over most public wireless networks is unencrypted, so that anyone on the same network can use some tools to read the data you transfer. Unless you’re communicating with your office via VPN (Virtual Private Network), which ensures a secure, encrypted channel even over the public network.

Second, rogue attacks are very easily executed on the public wireless network. One of these is the ‘evil twin’ attack. In this case, the attacker uses a laptop or other mobile device to place a wireless access point (WAP) close to your computer, one that gives a more powerful signal than the access point you intend to connect to. The name of such a ‘rogue’ network would probably be a known name, such as Linksys, so that you wouldn’t be suspicious about connecting. Once you do connect, all your data will flow through the attacker’s laptop to the Internet.

The third big risk is ‘over the shoulder’. Say you’re checking email or shopping online at a crowded cafĂ© or hotel lounge. There are chances of someone peeking at your usernames, passwords, and credit-card details as you enter them.

Here are a few ways in which you can guard against these risks.

• Take care while browsing
Public hotspots are definitely much less secure than your office networks. So try to avoid using them for transactions that require high levels of security, such as online banking or shopping. Reserve these for when you’re in a more secure environment.

• Use secure means
As far as possible, use VPNs for secure communication. Access email via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) sessions—many email providers support these. You could also avoid going to websites that require you to send sensitive information in clear-text, unencrypted format.

• Avoid evil twin attacks
To guard yourself against an evil twin attack while you’re trying to connect to a public network, carefully observe the icons on the screen that shows available network connections. If any icon shows two computers connected together, it’s a peer-to-peer network, something that’s used in evil twin attacks. Do not connect to such a network—the legitimate network would have the icon of a light beacon, and if it supports encryption, you will also see a padlock icon next to it. Prefer to connect to such an access point.

You can also tweak your Windows settings to avoid evil twin attacks. From the Wireless Networks panel, you can disable automatic connections; you can also configure your machine to “Connect to access point (infrastructure) networks only”. You could also give your home network a distinct name that cannot be confused with the names of other networks, so that there is less possibility of connecting to an ‘evil twin’ from home.

• Turn off all sharing
Your laptop may be configured for file and printer sharing. You should turn that off when you’re using a public hotspot. If you use share programs such as iTunes or have other shared directories on your laptop, you should turn those off too, unless you want to share your music and other preferences with a lot of strangers.

• Remember the basics
As always, the last line of defense is on your machine—a personal firewall and anti-virus and anti-spyware software are crucial. You should also have applied all the latest security patches to update

VoIP Hacks: Tips & Tools for Internet Telephony

VoIP Hacks: Tips & Tools for Internet Telephony
O'Reilly Media | ISBN: 0596101333 | December 1, 2005 | CHM | 306 pages | 6 MB

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is gaining a lot of attention these days, as more companies and individuals switch from standard telephone service to phone service via the Internet. The reason is simple: A single network to carry voice and data is easier to scale, maintain, and administer. As an added bonus, it's also cheaper, because VoIP is free of the endless government regulations and tariffs imposed upon phone companies.

VoIP is simply overflowing with hack potential, and "VoIP Hacks" is the practical guide from O'Reilly that presents these possibilities to you. It provides dozens of hands-on projects
for building a VoIP network, showing you how to tweak and customize a multitude of exciting things to get the job done. Along the way, you'll also learn which standards and practices
work best for your particular environment. Among the quick and clever solutions showcased in the book are those for:

gauging VoIP readiness on an enterprise network
using SIP, H.323, and other signaling specifications
providing low-layer security in a VoIP environment
employing IP hardphones, analog telephone adapters, and softPBX servers dealing with and avoiding the most common VoIP deployment mistakes
In reality, "VoIP Hacks" contains only a small subset of VoIP knowledge-enough to serve as an introduction to the world of VoIP and teach you how to use it to save money, be more productive, or just impress your friends. If you love to tinker and optimize, this is the one technology, and the one book, you must investigate.

Five basic guidelines to download

Five basic guidelines to download

Never downloaded programs before? We show you how, and what you should do to keep your download experience happy.

Your friend uses an application that makes assignments seem like a breeze or your colleague collects brownie points with boss by creating jazzy presentations. Well, stop fretting because you too can become the boss’s favorite. Just download applications from the Internet that help simplify your task.

The installation process of the software you download could be different for different computers, operating systems or browsers, but you just need to keep these five simple guidelines in mind.

Step One

Make a directory for downloads by right-clicking anywhere on the Windows desktop. This helps keep your desktop and hard drive mess-free, and grants easy access to all your downloads.

Step Two

Find the software that you want on the Internet and download. Usually all sites have a download link. Once you click on this link, a box pops up which gives you the option to Run, Save or Cancel the download. Click on the Save option and save the file in your download folder on the desktop.

Step Three

Most files that you download from the Internet are compressed. This reduces the download time considerably and helps in keeping all the files related to the program - like help files and drivers – together in a single file. Unzip the file using a program like WinZip. Files with the extension EXE are generally self-extracting files that decompress by double-clicking it. The installation in this kind of files start automatically after which you can skip directly to step 5.

Step Four

The next step is installation. You can look for the Install or Setup file from the folder you have unzipped the files into. WinZip can also detect the Install or Setup program contained in a ZIP file. While decompressing, it creates a button called Install in the WinZip button bar. Click this Install button, and let WinZip do the rest. Follow the instructions as they come up.

During install, the program will ask questions on the location where you want to install the software, and what program you want to add it to. Choose the default settings unless you have more knowledge or have a personal preference. Creating a desktop icon will give you easy access to the program.

Step Five

Once you have the program up and running, you don’t need the downloaded compressed file anymore. You can delete it.

How to Use WinRar

How to Use WinRar

This will show the basics for anyone new to winrar, how to extract a file, archive (rar) a file and way to check large files before you download all the parts.

Extracting a file

This is the easy way to extract (unrar) a file.

1- Right click on the rar file and it will open a menu box, there will be 3 choices, ignore
the first one which will leave "extract here" and extract to "name of file"

Either one will work but extract to is better just because it will make a new folder and put all the files in it (program, crack, readme and NFO files etc.). Extract here works too but if whoever uploaded it didnt put everything in a folder before raring it the parts of will not be together.

2- Click extract to and your done, just open the new folder and it's all in there.

Archiving a file

Archiving or raring a file is not that hard and winrar has a wizzard to help you but it's easy without it too.

1-Right click on the file you want to rar, then click add to archive.
This will open a new dialog box where you set everything up. Change the file name if your going to upload to rapidshare, they will delete the file if they see it's copywrited (movie, application etc.), sochange it to something that dosent discribe it (Ironman.rar to ima.rar)

2- Click recovery record, choose best for quality and if the file is larger then 100mb you need to split the file, just enter 100mb and it will do the rest.

3- Now click advanced then set password, enter your password and click encrypt file names (even if your not password protecting the file do this, this keeps file hosts from seeing whats in the rar file).

4- Click OK and your done, see not that hard is it.

Winrar trick

Some people know about this, some don't but it someting good to know.

Have you ever downloaded a movie and found the quality realy bad and if you are a free user it took a long time to find out it's bad, well there is a way to check the quality before you download all the parts.

1- Download part 1 of the movie, right click on it and pick the first choice "extract file" this will open a dialog box, leave everything as it is but click save broken files, then click OK. This will extract just the one part and let you view it to see how it is, if its ok just download the rest and extract them starting with part 1. You can delete the AVI file you checked because you dont need it.

This will also solve most CCR errors
Hope this helps anyone new to winrar, the ways I discribed are much easier then using the winrar console which tends to confuse people.

Back up your email messages easily

Back up your email messages easily
Safely back up your email from all the popular email programs

Introduction

The importance of making regular backups cannot be stressed highly enough. Unfortunately, many of us don’t realise just how important they are until it is too late.

When it comes to making backups, personal documents, digital photos and music files usually take priority with email not getting a look in.

The perception is that it’s a time-consuming and complicated process to carry out. But actually it can be straightforward.

In this Workshop we will show you how to back up messages from popular email programs such as Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

We will even show you how to make backups of messages stored in Gmail and Hotmail webmail accounts. Before starting, though, decide where you’re going to store your backups – on a USB memory key, perhaps, or burned to a recordable DVD.

1. Backing up email in Microsoft Outlook 2003 is straightforward. Click on File then Import and Export and choose Export to a file.
Select Personal Folder File (.pst) click on Next then make sure Personal Folders is highlighted. Check the box labelled ‘Include subfolders’ and click on Next.
Note the location of the backed-up file and click on Finish.
To later make use of the backup file choose Import and Export again and this time select ‘Import from another program or file’. Choose Personal Folder File (.pst), select the backup file then follow the prompts.

2. Windows Vista users have Windows Mail as their built-in email program.
Unlike its predecessor, Outlook Express, Windows Mail has its own backup facility.
Click on File, then Export followed by Messages.
Select Microsoft Windows Mail, click on Next and choose a location for the backup.
Click on Next and you can choose to back up All Folders or Selected folders.
When done, click Next and wait while the selected email folders are backed up.

3. Restoring Windows Mail messages from a backup is just as simple.
Click on File then Import and choose Messages.
Select Microsoft Windows Mail 7 then click on Next and browse to the location where your backup is stored.
You can also import messages from Outlook Express 6 – this is ideal if upgrading to Vista from Windows XP.
Choose which folders you want to import then click on Next then Finish.

4. When using webmail services, such as Hotmail, messages are stored online and can be considered pretty safe, but it is still a good idea to have a local copy on your PC in case your account is ever compromised.
The answer is to download and install Windows Live Mail from www.download.
live.com/wlmail. Once installed, copies of your Hotmail email messages are automatically downloaded to your PC.
Using My Computer, browse to this location: C:Users[Username]AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Live Mail. Open the Hotmail folder and double-click on any message to read them.

5. Google mail users can grab a free backup tool from www.gmail-backup.com (note this tool is not made by Google).
Click on Download gmail-backup-0.106.exe and install the program on your PC. Once installed, launch the program and then enter your Gmail login and password.
Now click on Directory to choose a folder where the messages are to be stored. Click on Backup and wait while the messages are copied.
Restoring is just as easy – just ensure the location in the Backup folder field is correct.

6. Unfortunately, Outlook Express doesn’t have a built-in backup facility for copying messages. So, if you use this program as your email tool you will need to use a third-party application to carry out the backup process.

Alternatively, Outlook Express emails can be backed up manually by copying the email folder. To do this, click Tools, then choose Options and select the Maintenance tab.
Click on Store Folder and in the dialogue box you’ll see the location on your hard disk
where your Outlook Express email folder is stored.

Click and highlight the folder location then press Ctrl and C to copy it. Next click on Start then choose Run. Press Ctrl and V to paste the folder location then click on OK to open the folder.
With this method of backing up it’s difficult to choose individual folders for copying so you will be backing up everything. Click on Edit then Select All.
With all items highlighted click on Edit and Copy.
You can now go to your backup device and select Paste from the Edit menu to copy of all these files.

If you need to make use of the backed-up files, begin by opening Outlook Express. Click on File, then Import then go to Messages. Under ‘Select an e-mail program to import from’ choose Outlook Express 6 and click on Next. Check the option labelled ‘Import from an OE6 directory’ and click on OK. Click on Browse and go to the location where the backed-up files are stored. Click on OK, then Next select All Folders then click on Next and Finish. The backup will be restored.

For a more automated backup process for Outlook Express, turn to a specialist utility, such as Static Outlook Express Backup. Visit www.staticbackup.com/downloads and scroll down to the ‘Email Backup Utilities Free Version’ heading. Click on the download link alongside Static Outlook Express Backup Free and save the file to the Windows Desktop.

Once downloaded, double-click on the downloaded file to begin the installation. Follow the prompts then click on Finish to launch the program. Close the Upgrade Benefits window and begin using the program.

The program window displays all the elements of Outlook Express that are going to be backed up. Click on Backup then click on the ‘?’ button to choose the location where the backup is to be stored. Choose a name for the backup and click on Save.

Next click on Start Backup and the copying will begin. Restoring the backed-up files is easy, but remember you will need to use the same software to do this.
Click on Backup Restore Wizard, locate the backed-up files and follow the simple steps.
